The Komodo Resource Locator is a
search engine front-end that represents an attempt to better
manage and make sense of search and research on the Internet.
The basic idea is this: Each time
you search on a particular keyword, a typical search engine
comes up with the same links. Some of those links are great,
some not so great, some completely off. The frustrating thing
is, if you conduct the same search 100 times it always comes up
with the same set of links. So the first requirement of the KRL
is:
-
Provide a method to advance a
keyword search, so that the second attempt remembers where
you left off after the first attempt, and you don't have to
start over each time you search on a particular keyword.
So the
primary goal is simply to allow the user to amass information
about a particular topic, in the most efficient manner possible.
This leads to the following requirements:
-
Make the process keyword based. Keep track of the
user's keywords, and compile statistics based on the
keyword.
-
Allow the user to dismiss or "prune" search results, so that
each time that particular keyword search is conducted, the
user doesn't have to wade through the very same results.
Another
motivation for this project is to connect the processes of
"surfing" and "searching." When you surf the web, often you come
across sites that should match a particular keyword. There
should be a natural way for you to add relevant links to your
search engine results.
In
addition to the foregoing, it should be self-evident that
Internet searches could be greatly enhanced by the user
community, with a simple rating system, so that everyone that
searches for a particular keyword can incrementally improve the
results, by sharing information.
So,
that pretty much covers the basic idea.
